Mapping out spending on Christmas gifts in the Nordic countries

The only gift you need for the holiday! Nordregio presents a map of household spending on Christmas gifts across the Nordic Region, as a percentage of average monthly disposable income.

Dive into regions and municipalities in the Nordic countries for a closer look at Christmas gift spending.

The proportional approach to measuring Christmas spending highlights differences that absolute spending figures would miss. For example, higher-income areas spend the most in nominal terms but the least relative to income. And remote and lower-income regions devote a much larger share of their income to Christmas gifts.

Data on disposable household income refer to 2023 and were collected from the national statistical institutes (NSIs); annual values were divided by twelve to estimate monthly income. Figures on gift expenditure for Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are based on the YouGov Nordic survey (2022).
