Karina Berbert Bruno
GIS Analyst
Karina is a human-physical geographer and demographer with a specialisation in GIS and remote sensing for social and environmental studies.

How do you use your skill sets and interests at Nordregio?
In my daily tasks, I focus on geography, demography, and data science, which are my main interests. This allows me to apply not only my cartographic and statistical skills, but also intensive critical thinking, which is one of my biggest professional goals.
How do GIS and cartography impact the research at Nordregio?
Through maps and visualisations, we make complex information, such as climate change and social inequality, more accessible and engaging for a broader audience. GIS’s most important contribution to Nordregio’s research is putting data at the core of our research.
What do you enjoy most about Nordregio’s work culture?
There are so many things I like, like the culturally diverse work environment, with colleagues from different countries and experiences, or the openness to discussing ideas and scientific approaches. But I have to say that the strong “fika” culture is also one of my favourite things.
We offer a dynamic and inclusive work environment where your ideas are valued, and your growth is supported. Enjoy flexible working conditions, professional development opportunities, and a healthy work-life balance. At Nordregio, you’ll not only contribute to meaningful projects but also thrive both personally and professionally.

From intern to senior: describe your career path at Nordregio!
I started as an intern and later became a research assistant during my university studies. After graduating, I continued as a Junior Research Fellow. From there, I advanced to Research Fellow and eventually Senior Research Advisor. Since starting, I have acquired a second master’s degree and additional courses. Nordregio has encouraged me throughout, recognising that it’s beneficial both for my personal development and the organisation
What has made you want to stay at Nordregio?
What I appreciate most are the colleagues. We have a friendly work environment where people collaborate on fascinating projects. Whether it’s a small-scale initiative in a specific region or a large-scale international project, the teamwork and camaraderie make every day enjoyable.
What is a typical day like for you?
There’s no typical day at Nordregio. One week might start with a project proposal meeting, continue with stakeholder discussions, a presentation abroad, and end with a data workshop. The next might be spent at your desk, focused on one project, with time for after-work fun. Every week brings new challenges and opportunities.
