Thomas Niedomysl has extensive experience of research, research leadership and applied analysis across academic and public-sector settings. His areas of expertise are regional and local development, population change and migration, place attractiveness and applied analysis.

At Nordregio, Thomas leads the development of the institute’s research and works to strengthen research quality, collaboration and partnerships across the Nordic Region and Europe.

His work spans regional and local development in both urban and rural contexts. His research focuses particularly on migration behaviour and motives, demographic change, and the attractiveness of places and regions. A broader focus of his work is how research and applied analysis can contribute to understanding and addressing challenges facing municipalities and regions.

Before joining Nordregio, Thomas was Head of Analytics at Uppsala Municipality. He has also held research and teaching positions at several Swedish universities and research institutes, as well as working with regional analysis and development in the public sector. This combination of academic research, applied analysis and experience from local and regional government underpins his work on regional and local development from both research and policy perspectives.

Thomas is a member of Formas’ Scientific Council, appointed by the Swedish Government. He welcomes contact regarding research collaborations, Nordic and European partnerships, and issues related to regional and local development.
