Zoe Garbis

Social scientist with a background in international affairs and human geography. My research has examined land-use conflicts in relation to the green energy transition in Arctic contexts and more recently, tensions between civil preparedness and sustainability. This work is guided by awareness of the many ways in which human and environmental systems are intertwined.

Spatial Story

I come from a long line of globetrotters and so it is perhaps not a surprise that my life has been punctuated by a series of migrations. From London to Stockholm to Seattle to Washington DC, then back to London and Stockholm (by way of Lund), I certainly cannot say that I’m accustomed to a settled life. As much as this journey has forced me to confront identity and belonging, it has also made me acutely aware of the privileges of transiting through the world voluntarily and with the security of citizenship. Many do not have these opportunities (nor perhaps, do they wish for a life of vagabondery), and it is their experiences—of being firmly rooted in place—that have guided my research endeavors to date. It is maybe my lack of rootedness that leads me to be so enamored by the passion of those who fight to preserve or develop the places they call home.
