Map Facts
This map shows “Local administrative units, level 1” (LAU 1), according to the pan-European classification system for administrative units below regional level. In Denmark, this is equivalent to the municipality level (kommune, 98 entities); in Iceland, the administrative region (landsvædi, 8 entities); and in Norway, the economic region (økonomisk region, 89 entities). In the Faroe Islands, although not officially part of the LAU classification, the sýsla (6 entities) is comparable to the LAU 1 level.
In Sweden, LAU 1 units are the same as the NUTS 3 regions (län) and are therefore not included in this map. In Finland, economic regions used to equal LAU 1 level, but these are (since 2015) no longer official administrative units.
