Spatial Story
I grew up in the French-speaking part of Brussels, close to the forest, where the city slowly gives way to the trees. Even when I was young, I had a nagging feeling that I would one day live abroad.
Maybe it was already in my blood. In the early 1600s, skilled workers from the region that is now Belgium, many of them Walloons, came to Sweden to help develop the country’s iron industry. I’ve always found that story fascinating. While my path led me here in a very different way (and without any ironworking skills, unfortunately!), I like to think that this connection between Belgium and Sweden might be one tiny reason I’ve always felt drawn to this place.
My journey north (at least from a Belgian perspective) came much later, and for different reasons. I moved to Stockholm to study and then stayed to work. Somewhere along the way, what was meant to be temporary became something more permanent.
Living between cultures has come to feel natural to me. I carry my Belgian background and roots, while also feeling a strong connection to Scandinavian culture and the way of life I have found here.
My role as a Communications Advisor at Nordregio perfectly reflects this sense of belonging between places. At the heart of my work is creating spaces where people and ideas can come together, connect and grow across cultures and industries.
