Demographic shifts are transforming the Nordic Region through declining fertility, ageing populations, changing migration patterns, and, in many areas, long-term population shrinkage. These changes impact everything from labour markets and public service provision to housing, education, social cohesion and integration.

Nordregio’s research helps policymakers understand and respond to these trends and their regional implications. We monitor and analyse population change across the Nordic Region, combining statistical data with spatial, policy, and place-based analysis. Our work sheds light on challenges such as falling birth rates, growing diversity, and geographic inequalities, but also explores how communities can adapt.

By providing comparative knowledge, local insights, and policy-relevant analysis, Nordregio supports informed decision-making in regional development and planning. Our work helps local, regional, and national authorities to anticipate demographic pressures and design strategies that contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and balanced regional growth across the Nordics.
