Nordic Statistics database & NORDIC HEALTH AND WELFARE STATISTICS
Statistics

In addition to research, Nordregio serves as a hub for Nordic statistics by coordinating the Nordic Statistics Database and the secretariat for the Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee (NOMESCO) and the Nordic Social Statistical Committee (NOSOSCO). By managing both, Nordregio ensures that researchers, policymakers, and regional planners have access to integrated data sources that enhance collaboration and informed decision-making.
Nordic Statistics Database
The Nordic Statistics Database is a collection of comparative data on various aspects of Nordic society, including demographics, labour markets, economy, environment, and education. The database contains about two hundred matrices. Data is collected from national statistical institutes (NSIs), the Nordic Health and Welfare Statistics database, other Nordic statistical producers, and international sources including Eurostat, OECD, and the UN.
Collection and development of Nordic statistics been funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers since the mid-1960s. Nordregio manages the further development of the platform in close cooperation with national experts, Statisticon and partners to ensure quality, consistency, and continued relevance.
The database supports researchers, policymakers, and the public by offering reliable, up-to-date statistics to enhance evidence-based decision-making and regional cooperation across the Nordic countries.

Nordic Health and Welfare Statistics
(NOMESCO–NOSOSCO)
Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee (NOMESCO) and the Nordic Social Statistical Committee (NOSOSCO) are Nordic cooperation bodies responsible for compiling statistics on healthcare, public health, social protection, ageing, and other welfare-related topics.
The committees are composed of national delegates from the Nordic countries, whose expertise and cooperation drive the development of high-quality statistics. This data helps inform national and regional policy development, improves cross-border learning and knowledge-sharing, and supports long-term planning.
As the NOMESCO-NOSOSCO secretariat, Nordregio supports the committees’ activities and fosters cooperation between national statistical authorities, ensuring the visibility, usability, and continued development of the Nordic Health and Welfare Statistics.
Why do we need Nordic data?
Combining expertise in research and statistics makes Nordregio well-positioned to transform data into actionable knowledge and comparative insights, and support collaboration across borders and disciplines. Linking statistical insights with broader regional research and policy discussions helps bridge the gap between research and policy and create joint solutions.
