Marine and maritime activities are vital for the development of a sustainable blue economy, which spans sectors such as food production, transport, renewable energy, and coastal tourism. Sustainable governance, and use, of marine spaces are necessary for the Nordic green transition, resilient coastal economies, and citizen well-being.  

However, increasing pressures on marine and coastal ecosystems from human activities and climate change are creating challenges, including conflicts between competing sea uses, various interests and values. These pressures are particularly significant in Arctic and coastal regions, where environmental and societal impacts are profound due to their dependency on the ocean.
