Nordregio’s research helps understanding and advancing solutions for ecologically responsive, socially just, and economically inclusive cities and attractive urban environments. We examine Nordic planning systems, governance roles, and the interplay between public and private actors in shaping urban development. Our work also explores how policies and practices can promote climate neutrality, social equity, with key areas of focus including efficient land use and prioritisation, housing development and smart mobility.
A key focus is on addressing emerging challenges, including climate adaptation, resource scarcity, segregation, and urban health inequalities. Nordregio also compares planning systems across the Nordics, highlighting their role in achieving cross-sectoral goals such as climate action and biodiversity preservation. Through practical insights we contribute to sustainable urban planning across the Nordic Region.
