This map shows demographic vulnerability in Nordic-Baltic municipalities based on the indicator gender balance of the working age population. Under this indicator, municipalities are deemed to be vulnerable when the gender ratio of the working age population falls below 96.2 – that is, when there are less than 96.2 females per 100 males of working age. The majority of municipalities in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Estonia have a gender ratio that falls below this threshold (shortage of females of working age). Overall, Denmark has a better gender balance among the working age population compared to other Nordic countries. Lithuania and Latvia also perform well in terms of gender balance of the working age population. Gender ratio above 96.2 can also be found, mainly in the capital areas and some dynamic, growing city-regions.
Gender balance of the working age population is one of 10 indicators used to measure demographic vulnerability in the Nordic-Baltic Region. The map “Nordic-Baltic Demographic Vulnerabilities”, takes in all 10 indicators to provide an overall picture of demographic vulnerabilities at the municipal level.
