Map Facts
This map shows the regional and municipal divisions of the Nordic countries, including the latest municipal and regional boundary changes, as of 1 January 2017. Also included are the regional boundaries according to the latest version of the pan-European “NUTS” (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics).
Municipal boundaries are delineated by thin grey lines. In Iceland and the Faroese Islands there is a level roughly between municipalities and regions, referred to as statistical units (Iceland) and “sýsla” (the Faroese Islands). These are commonly used for statistical purposes, and are marked with thin orange lines in the map. The “NUTS” levels range from NUTS 0 (national level) to NUTS 3 (smaller regions). NUTS 3 regions represent the standard regional division in Finland, Norway and Sweden and are shown in the map with thin white boundaries and varying background colours. The NUTS 2 regional level is equivalent to Denmark’s regions. NUTS 2 boundaries are represented by grey and white dashed lines in the map. NUTS 1 divisions are only made in Sweden (3), and Finland (dividing Finland into “Mainland Finland” and Åland). In Denmark, Norway and Iceland NUTS 1 represents the national level.
