Gini coefficient — income inequality across Nordic municipalities

Nordregio maps income inequality across more than 1,000 Nordic municipalities, using the Gini coefficient of disposable household income.

Income inequality in the Nordics is not evenly spread — and the sharpest divides sit right next to the region’s wealthiest addresses. In 2024, the highest Gini values were recorded in affluent suburbs of the Nordic capitals: Danderyd and Lidingö outside Stockholm, and Gentofte and Rudersdal outside Copenhagen, all combining very high incomes with wide gaps between residents. At the other end, inequality is lowest in rural Norwegian municipalities such as Kvam, Bremanger and Flå, where income distributions are comparatively flat.
