Cross-border regional labour market analysis

The DG REGIO project aims to strengthen cross-border labour market integration across Europe by improving the quality and comparability of data and analysis. To achieve this, the project developed a methodological framework for analyzing cross-border labour markets, produced a comprehensive Handbook offering practical guidance on data harmonization, indicator construction, and best practices, and conducted case studies—such as those on the Öresund and Schleswig–Sønderjylland regions—to identify barriers and opportunities. These efforts culminated in policy recommendations designed to help regional and national authorities implement evidence-based solutions for more integrated and resilient labour markets.

The project addresses the challenge of fragmented and inconsistent approaches to cross-border labour market analysis in Europe. Many border regions lack harmonized data, common indicators, and coordinated governance, making it difficult to understand labour mobility patterns and design effective policies. By developing a methodological handbook, case studies, and practical guidance, the project aims to overcome these gaps, improve data comparability, and support integrated labour markets that enhance regional competitiveness and resilience.

Nordregio provided methodological expertise and authored key case studies (Öresund and Schleswig–Sønderjylland) for DG REGIO’s cross-border labour market project, leading the CBLM Handbook and supporting data harmonization and policy guidance to improve integrated labour markets.

The project delivers actionable tools that empower EU regions to manage cross-border labour markets effectively. By strengthening evidence-based policymaking, it fosters territorial cohesion, mobility, and long-term economic and social resilience.
