Localising the SDGs

The Nordic countries are often placed at the top of global rankings on sustainable development, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Much of the success of the Nordic Region stems from the local system of governance, under which many decisions are taken in local democratic forums. In many ways, municipalities and regions support the wellbeing of our everyday lives in the Nordic Region. They provide public services such as infrastructure, waste treatment and social services. Therefore, local and regional authorities are critical to the overall successful implementation of the sustainability ambitions established at other government levels. A change towards sustainable development will not occur without the commitment of the local and regional governments.
The work with creating links and learning about the SDGs in the Nordic Region by Nordregio and the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2018 and 2019 have been appreciated and annual events about the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs have been asked for from Nordic Regions and Municipalities.
Based on the previous work, Nordregio will in this project continue to support the implementing of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs at local and regional level in the Nordic Region by creating a seminar series of 6 digital events during November 2020 to February 2021 for local and regional actors to share knowledge on Agenda 2030 and SDGs across the Nordic Region. The work will also result in a report that summarises the seminar series.
The ambition is that Nordregios role of enabling knowledge sharing will continue with annual physical and digital events up until 2030 for robust support regarding the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs at local and regional levels. The exact form and specifications are suggested to be decided in dialogue with contact person at NCM in the start of each year.
