Research to facilitate a competitive and inclusive green transition on the agenda in Kiruna

Policy makers from all over the Nordic Region met in Kiruna, Sweden, to discuss research projects about a competitive and inclusive green transition at the local and regional level. The meeting was hosted by Nordregio.

Kiruna is a good example of what Nordregio’s thematic research is looking at. How a municipality and a region that is highly affected by the green transition tackles opportunities and challenges. And what that means for competitiveness and the people living in the region, says Hilma Salonen, project manager for the thematic research group.

Experts from Region Norrbotten and Kiruna Växer joined the meeting to give insights on the development of the region and city. They highlighted the need for more people to move to the region to fill the growing number of jobs being created, as well as the challenges towns like Kiruna has providing accommodation.

The meeting also included a tour of the Kiruna old and new city, learning about the city moving when the mine expands. The group also visited SSC Space offices in Kiruna, for an overview of the space industry in the region.
