Nordregio will release the 21st edition of State of the Nordic Region on 25 March. The report outlines how demographic change, labour market shifts, and evolving economic conditions shape development across the Nordic regions.

“At a time of overlapping transitions, there is a clear need for analysis that captures both shared trends and regional differences. State of the Nordic Region 2026 strengthens the evidence base for understanding how development unfolds in different territorial contexts across the Nordics," says Maria Bobrinskaya, Head of GIS at Nordregio and co-editor of the report.

Diverse developments, shared challenges and opportunities

State of the Nordic Region 2026 examines how population dynamics evolve, how labour markets adapt to constant change, and how Nordic economies fare through turbulent times.

The report provides a comparative perspective on regional development. It combines comparable data, maps and analysis to examine how common challenges play out differently across territories. By focusing on variation within broadly similar welfare systems, it supports more informed policy discussions at local, regional and national levels.

"Nordic comparison remains particularly valuable because of the similarities between the countries. We are not comparing fundamentally different systems, but variations within a shared framework. This allows differences to be interpreted as meaningful signals that can inform policy learning and reflection," says Thomas Niedomysl, Research Director at Nordregio and co-editor of the report.

Transitions, trends and regional dynamics

The 2026 edition continues the established focus on demography, labour markets and the economy. It also reflects the current concerns related to resilience, preparedness and long-term structural change. Rather than advancing a single narrative, the report highlights patterns, divergences and emerging pressures across regions.

By combining a Nordic-wide perspective with detailed regional analysis, State of the Nordic Region 2026 offers food for thought for policymakers, researchers and practitioners working with regional development. It is designed to support assessment, comparison and dialogue across sectors and levels of governance.
