Remote yet connected: Critical and inclusive digitalisation on the Faroe Islands

How can digital connectivity support life, services and innovation in remote island communities?

This interactive storymap explores how the Faroe Islands have developed a highly connected digital society across 18 islands in the North Atlantic. It shows how 5G, fibre networks, digital public services and smart local solutions are supporting everyday life, public services, business development and territorial cohesion.

The case highlights examples from Tórshavn and beyond, including elderly-care sensors, smart street lighting, traffic management, digital governance, and submarine cable resilience. It also points to key challenges linked to cybersecurity, digital skills, data protection and dependence on critical digital infrastructure.

The Faroe Islands show that the business case for connectivity is not only commercial. It is also societal, enabling equal access, stronger local services and more resilient communities across remote and rural areas.

This is the third and final storymap in Nordregio’s Connectivity series, developed as part of the Nordic-Baltic Connectivity project (NB-Connect) funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The series explores how digital connectivity, 5G infrastructure and local innovation shape regional development in Brožiai, Lithuania; Tavelsjö, Sweden; and the Faroe Islands.
